A 4-year-old Garland girl has died from the flu, according to a GoFundMe set up by her family.
The GoFundMe said she died on Jan. 31 after falling ill with flu type A and pneumonia. Ashanti Grinage is now the first child to die from flu complications this flu season.
Her father said Ashanti died two days after testing positive for the flu, according to WFAA. He also said she seemed to be doing well after her first doctor visit, but by Thursday, she was coughing up mucus.
Her mother also got sick with the flu and pneumonia.
"My sister, Ashanti’s mom & her father Martel are heartbroken to say the least as the life they knew has been shattered into a million pieces," Ashanti's aunt said on the GoFundMe. "My sister ended up in the ER with flu type A & pneumonia the same sickness that her baby had. My sister is now recovering at this time thankfully it was caught in time."
