A Texas 24-year-old was shot and killed by a 12-year-old on Wednesday, police said.
According to WOAI, the man, John Duane VanMeter, was known for his boxing and was working toward going professional.
Police said VanMeter was shot just before 8 p.m. in the 600 block of Boone Street. The victim's girlfriend called 911 to report that someone broke into her home and shot her boyfriend.
When officers arrived, they saw VanMeter lying on the living room floor near the front door with a gunshot wound to his head. He was later pronounced dead at the Uvalde Memorial Hospital.
Witnesses reported seeing a male subject running from the home dressed in all black and with a black bandana across his face.
On Thursday, a 12-year-old was charged with capital murder for the crime. He is being held at the Jourdanton Juvenile Detention Center.
The victim's girlfriend told WOAI the suspect and her son are classmates, adding the 12-year-old even lived with them for a period of time.
