TN police officers, sergeants punished for shaming a transgender person

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Five Metro Nashville Police officers and two sergeants were reprimanded in after a three-month-long investigation into the online shaming of a transgender person.

The Office of Professional Accountability handed down the sanction recommendations following the investigation.

Sergeant Melvin Brown posted photos of the person to Facebook with one of the captions saying, "Freedom to express yourself has reached its peak in 2017!" Another photo was captioned with statements questioning what bathroom the person would use.

MNPD officials said the employees were given the choice to accept the recommendations or request formal disciplinary hearings. However, the remedial training would be conducted either way.

  • Ofc. Craig Oakley: Five-day suspension. In addition, mandatory remedial training related to the topics of Law Enforcement and the Transgender Community, Diversity and Inclusion, and Social media.
  • Ofc. Andy Esqueda: Three-day suspension. In addition, mandatory remedial training related to the topics of Law Enforcement and the Transgender Community, Diversity and Inclusion, and Social media.
  • Ofc. Tim Morgan: Two-day suspension. In addition, mandatory remedial training related to the topics of Law Enforcement and the Transgender Community, Diversity and Inclusion, and Social media.
  • Ofc. David Snowden: Two-day suspension. In addition, mandatory remedial training related to the topics of Law Enforcement and the Transgender Community, Diversity and Inclusion, and Social media.
