Copperas Cove mayor dies at age 79

Copperas Cove Mayor Frank Seffrood has unexpectedly died, city officials said on Friday afternoon.

Seffrood passed away from a brief illness on Friday morning while at home with his family. He was 79 years old.

Mayor Seffrood served in the U.S. Army for 23 years. He retired from the Army in 1979.

He served as a city councilman for 6.5 years before being elected as mayor in 2005. Recently, Seffrood was re-elected to serve a second three-year term on Dec. 11.

"He had a contagious positivity, love for life, family that was unparalleled and respected by many," city officials said. "Mayor Seffrood was a driving force in the community and he will be greatly missed."

Seffrood was born in southern Wisconsin in 1939.  He earned his Associate's Degree in Computer Programming and a Bachelor's Degree in Information Systems. 

Before joining city council, Seffrood worked for Central Texas College from six years and the United States Postal Service for 24 years.

Seffrood and his wife Rita lived in Copperas Cove for 55 years. He leaves behind three children and three grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements have been set for Seffrood.

The visitation will take place on Saturday, Jan. 5 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and on Sunday, Jan. 6 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home.

The rosary will take place at the Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home on Sunday, Jan. 6 at 7:30 p.m.

Seffrood's funeral service has been scheduled for Monday, Jan. 7 at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church. Interment will follow at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery.
