HAMILTON, AL (WBRC) - Hamilton’s police chief confirms a man is dead following a shooting outside the police department on Christmas afternoon.
Chief Ronny Vickery says a mother was with her boyfriend when she was dropping off her children with their father in the parking lot outside the police department.
That’s when police say the woman’s boyfriend shot and killed the father of the children. The victim has not yet been identified by police.
“It’s a tragedy, just a tragedy,” Chief Vickery said.
The suspect in custody has been identified by police as Andy Cochran. He is charged with murder.
“There were some words exchanged between the father and his ex,” Chief Vickery said.
Chief Vickery says many couples who are divorced use the police department’s parking lot to drop off children with the other parent on weekends or holidays because it is considered a safe place to do so.
