If you have big boxes to get rid of thanks to all that Christmas shopping, Hewitt police have a helpful tip.

"Bag those boxes" is what Hewitt police officers say to do. Instead of leaving the empty TV or gaming system boxes outside the trash can for everyone to see what Santa brought you for Christmas.

Break them down and put them in your trash can. Officials say that even though the items may be out of the box that doesn't stop some from breaking in and stealing the new shiny toys.

"That way they're hidden, out of view because we can assure you that the criminals are driving up and down the streets and they're doing some shopping after Christmas as well," Hewitt Chief of Police Jim Devlin said.

Chief Devlin also says that there is always a rise in theft from Thanksgiving until the end of the year.
