On Tuesday, the Waco City Council approved buying additional acreage for the proposed landfill in the Axtell area.
The twenty acres located at 4550 T K Parkway will cost $396,550.
Earlier this year, the city bought 1,274 acres near T K Parkway and State Highway 31 when it filed a permit application with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
Waco Mayor Kyle Deaver said the footprint of the landfill will be 175 acres and the rest of the land will be used for buffer.
"It provides green space and sort of some screening so people who live in that area or around that area and moved around that area are not as disturbed by the landfill itself," Deaver said.
He said the city does not anticipate buying additional land at this point.
Neighbors in McLennan and Limestone County have voiced their disagreement with the location of the proposed landfill in the past, citing pollution and increase traffic on county roads concerns.
The TCEQ's permitting process could take three to five years.
