Polio-like illness confirmed in several Texas counties

The polio-like illness affecting children and adults around the country has been found in several Texas counties. 

According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, acute flaccid myelitis (AFM) is a rare condition that affects a person's spinal cord. It's marked by a sudden onset of weakness in arms and legs. 

In Texas, 16 cases have been reported: 

  • Collin County: 2
  • Dallas County: 2
  • Galveston: 1 
  • Harris: 1 
  • Hays: 1
  • Hill: 1
  • Kaufman: 1
  • Parker: 1
  • Smith: 1
  • Tarrant: 3
  • Travis: 2

The cause of the condition is still unknown. The department said that its hard to diagnose AFM because it shares symptoms with several other neurologic conditions.
