Mission Waco has started yet another project to revitalize North Waco.

On Monday, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for The Colcord Center, located right across the street from the Jubilee Food Market and the Jubilee Theatre.

The plan is to take the old, neglected liquor store and transform it into an economic center that will house three different retail shops.

Mission Waco President Jimmy Dorrell said it's exciting to rebuild the area he's called home for decades.

"My wife and I and kids have been here for 41 years in this neighborhood and we've watched God bring it back," Dorrell said. "This is what life is about. It's very meaningful and fun to be part of this."

Dorrell said the people of North Waco will have a say in what businesses come in. So far, they've suggested everything from a laundromat and an insurance agency to a hair salon.

Dorrell added that it should take about three or four months for the first shop to open. The plans for the other two stores are being drawn up now. The entire space should be up and running in a year.
