The Bellmead Police Department said they have arrested a woman after a 3-year-old was found not breathing in an apartment complex pool area in the 3600 block of Scroggins Dr. on Sunday.

Police said that 20-year-old Sharrun Jernigan had the responsibility of supervising the child while she was in the pool area. Investigators said the child was left unsupervised for an extended period of time.

Officers found the child not breathing after receiving a call around 2 p.m. The child was brought to the hospital, where she later died.

The initial cause of death has been ruled a drowning, but police said the investigation is ongoing.

Jernigan has been charged with injury to a child and is in the McLennan County Jail.
