Several people in the Killeen community honored the life of a local veteran on Monday.
Neal Fredericksen Jr., who served in the Navy from March 1977 to May 1978, was laid to rest at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen.
What was initially an un-accompanied veteran's funeral, changed when Fredericksen's niece was able to accept the flag for her uncle.
The cemetery's un-official Chaplin Marc George said at least once a month the community shows up to honor a veteran that either has no family that can make it or none at all.
"They signed their life away to Uncle Sam saying, 'Use me as you would whether I lived or died.' So, with that, we try to honor them and every veteran that passes should have some kind of remembrance," George said.
