Affordable family friendly things to do this summer

It's officially summertime, and the kids are out of school and ready to have fun!

Central Texas has several family-friendly events for the kiddos. Most events are affordable, and others are free.

Hawaiian Falls in Waco:

Did you know Hawaiian Falls offer daily discounts?

Mondays: Buy a regular priced Big Kahuna Daily Admission before noon and get one Little Kahuna Daily Admission for free! You can substitute for a Big Kahuna for $7 (Little Kahuna’s must be under 48”)

Thursdays: Buy two Big Kahuna Daily Admission tickets and get one free!

Twilight Pass: Get half-priced Big Kahuna and Little Kahuna Daily Admission Tickets after 3 p.m. (available every day)

On June 30: Hawaiian Falls will host Champions Day for individuals with special needs. Any special needs child or adult receives free admission and family members or caregiver’s tickets are only $10 (Up to four people per family)

The park will open early 8:30-10 a.m. for Champions Day and then will open at 10:30 a.m. for regular admission. Champions and their family members can stay all day at the park at no additional charge.

Movies in Your Park Series in Killeen:

Killeen’s free 2018 Movies in Your Park Series will premier June 29 at 8: 30 p.m. at the Killeen Amphitheater located next to the Killeen Community Center.

The series will kick off with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

Here is the summer schedule:

June 29: Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, PG-13

July 6: Despicable Me 3, PG

July 20: Lego Ninjago, PG

July 27: CoCo, PG

All movies are free and start at dusk

Viewers should bring a blanket or lawn chair. Concessions will be available for purchase or you may bring your own. No alcoholic beverages or glass containers are permitted.

Dr. Pepper Museum in Waco:

The Dr. Pepper Museum is opening their Eat Well, Play Well summer exhibition for the summer of 2018.

Families, children and groups are welcome to come and explore the worlds of nutrition and fitness in this exhibition. There will be hands-on science exhibits which examine healthy living strategies by teaching the science of making healthy food choices and helping children and adults discover that there are many fun and interesting ways to stay active.

At the end of the exhibit, the goal is for visitors to realize that healthy life choices are within their reach.

The admission prices for families are affordable! Four and younger are free, students and children are $6 and adults are $10

The Dr. Pepper Museum will be open all summer long, opening at 10 a.m. Monday through Saturday and at noon on Sunday’s. The museum will stay open until 5:30 p.m.

Fourth on the Brazos in Waco:

It’s a Waco tradition! Admission is free for the whole family!

Located at Touchdown Alley next to McLane Stadium.

There will be food trucks, a kids zone, interactive booths and more along the Brazos River.

The event will consist of two concerts: Zac Harmon Blues Band and Desperado – Eagles Tribute

Summer Fun Waterpark in Belton:

Looking for a cheaper swimming option? How about taking the family on a trip to this waterpark!

Adults are $16, and children under 3-12 are $13. The park is open from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. Monday-Saturday. On Sunday’s admission, everyone is $13!

The waterpark also offers different events for teens and adults:

Adult night consists of leaving the kids at home and floating the lazy river. There will be live music and BYOB, but no glass or outside food. The event starts at 8 p.m. and will end at midnight on certain days throughout the summer. 

Teen night consists of a fun night of laser lights, live DJs and swimming. Drugs, alcohol and poor attitudes will not be permitted. There will be police on duty. Teen night is from 8-11 p.m. on certain days throughout the summer.

Lions Junction Family Water Park in Temple:

Another affordable water park and in the Temple area! This waterpark is open every day of the week with hours varying on the day. The park is open on the weekdays from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m., on Saturday’s 11 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. and Sunday’s noon – 6:30 p.m.

If you are a Temple resident: Adult tickets are $7, children are $5

If you are not a Temple resident: Adult tickets are $8, children are $6

There are different amenities in the park that make it fun for the whole family! There are waterslides, a deep-water pool and a lazy river to relax and go for the ride.

Spare Time in Temple:

There are a few deals at Spare Time in Temple for the summer and the upcoming holiday!

The summer madness deal: Bowling and shoes, laser tag and unlimited video game play from 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. It's $15.99 per person.

Fourth of July madness deal: Bowling and shoes, laser tag and unlimited video game play from 11 a.m. – midnight. It's $15.99 per person.
