It's a sport that's unfamiliar to most of us, but a local woman is really good at it.

Kila Nixon went to China in October as a member of the U.S. national team for a number of competitions.

Nixon, typically known as a boxing instructor for EJK Gym in Killeen was named a U.S. National Team member in July.

"I walked in and told my husband 'Can you read it to me' and he told me yes, it means you made the team," Nixon said.

After two years of training and time trials Nixon's dream came true and little did she know, it was the start of her journey to the medal podium.

"I have six Bronze Medals and one Silver," Nixon said.

All medals that she won with the US Senior A team for both the women and the co-ed team in the International Dragon Boat Federation Championshipsin China.

Nixon competed in 19 races in just five days.

"The body was just doing what it was doing it was just go go go and I don't think i have even gotten over what I was doing. It hasn't sunk in fully yet," Nixon added.

While Nixon is still trying to wrap her mind around the recent accomplishment, friends said, she deserves everything she has won.

"Nobody else deserves it more than her," Gym Manager, Jarvis Johnson said.

"I always tell her she is the little island girl, she came from a small island and she is here in the U.S. now and she is just amazing," Nixon's friend, Sandra Noel added.

But Nixon said she doesn't do it for the glory, but for the kids back at the EJK Boxing Gym.

"I like to give back it's my passion for the children to give back to the community. I know that without a community network backing me up I don't think I would be, as you call it, a champion," Nixon said.
