An inmate at the Coryell County jail died after an altercation with jailers on Sunday night, deputies said.
The death happened after jailers with the Coryell County Sheriff Office responded to jail violations by an inmate, 46-year-old Kelli Page.
Deputies said jailers made contact and attempted to de-escalate the situation through verbal commands but Page did not comply. In response, the jailers used a chemical agent which had no effect on Page forcing the jailers to enter the cell and restrain her.
As the jailers attempted to restain Page, an altercation broke out and Page was able to get possession of the handcuffs. During this altercation, one jailer was left with non-life threatening injuries.
Once Page was in handcuffs, jailers noticed she had become unresponsive. The restraints were removed and the jailers performed CPR while dispatching EMS. Page was pronounced dead after EMS arrived.
The cell area of the jail was cordoned off for investigation, deputies said.
Page's body has been sent to Southwest Institute of Forensic for an autopsy.
