The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s golf team rallied on the final day and won the team title at the Schreiner Spring Shootout Tuesday in Kerrville. The win comes in the spring opener for the Cru women.
UMHB fired a final round 314 to finish with a 326-314=640 to claim the team title. The Cru edged first-round leader Southwestern University (318-324=642) and tournament host Schreiner University (329-313=642) by two strokes. Trinity University carded a 331-313=644 to take fourth place and Concordia Texas rounded out the top five with a 341-324=645 total. An eight-team field competed in the tournament.
Tori Gatling posted the top individual finish for the Cru. Gatling carded an 80-78=158 to tie for fourth place. Emily Ming shot 82-77=159 to tie for sixth place for UMHB and McKenna Ralston’s 84-77=161 put her in a tie for ninth place to give the Cru three golfers in the top ten. Aubrey Starnes (80-82) and Cassidy Rawls (87-75) both shot 162’s to tie for 12th place and Rawls posted her first collegiate ace with a hole-in-one on the 145-yard eighth hole. Olivia Robinson shot 85-85=170 for UMHB to finish in 25th place. Southwestern’s Valentina Olivieri fired a 75-79=154 to win individual medalist honors.
The two-day, 36-hole event was played on a par-72, 5,840-yard layout at Comanche Trace Golf Course in Kerrville. The UMHB women will return to action with the Division III National Preview next Monday and Tuesday. That tournament will be played at Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston, the site of the 2017 NCAA Division III Women’s Golf National Championships.
