Central Texan groups kick off heater drive

With cold temperatures setting in, some local groups are hoping to help make sure the elderly stay warm.

As winter approaches, Meals on Wheels is using their service to deliver heaters to those who need it most.

Meals on Wheels is working with several Central Texas agencies, including Caritas, Friends for Life, Enriched Seniors and Heart of Texas agency to distribute the space heaters.

Friday ahead of a cold snap, Meal on Wheels Director of Client Services, Laura Ziemer is dropping off a new heater to Minnie Gonzalez of Robinson.

"They don't have access to resources may times they or their on a fix income so many times they aren't able to afford to buy even a space heater," Ziemer said.

As it's colder Gonzalez bundles up, wearing thick sweaters, slippers and socks around the house...it's still not enough.

"I asked Meals on Wheels if they were having, you know if they were giving away heaters and they were, so I was blessed," Gonzalez said. She simply called the organization and they dropped the heater off.

The space heaters are about $20 each and they are also portable, which can make a world of difference for those who need them.

"Some of the folks, the houses they are in don't have good central heat or it's just to expensive to run the central heat and they need a little extra warmth in the rooms they are in," Ziemer said.

Gonzalez is not anticipating the temperatures but is still in good spirits.

"I'm blessed I'll have something to keep us warm besides blankets."

If you are interested in donating, Meals on Wheels is accepting monetary donations or heaters which can be dropped off at their Waco location.
