University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football players Teidrick Smith and DeNerian Thomas have been named American Southwest Conference Football Players of the Week. The duo was honored for their performances in the Cru’s 63-7 victory over Louisiana College to close out the regular season last Saturday.
Smith, a senior defensive end from Hallettsville High School, recorded six total tackles, 3.0 sacks and 4.0 tackles for loss to lead the Cru defense in Saturday’s win. UMHB held the Wildcats to a season-low seven points and -7 yards rushing. Smith also extended his own UMHB and ASC career records for sacks and tackles for loss.
Thomas, a sophomore wide receiver and kick returner from Mart High School, answered Louisiana College’s only touchdown by returning the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for a UMHB score. It was the first kickoff return for a TD in Thomas’ Cru career and tied the UMHB and ASC record for longest kickoff return.
The Cru finished the regular season at 10-0 and won the ASC title with a 6-0 league record. UMHB will advance to the NCAA Division III National Championships for the 13th straight season and will host Redlands (CA) in a First Round game with a 12:00 PM kickoff at Crusader Stadium this Saturday.
