For the first time in nearly a month, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team will hit the road when the Cru travels to Brownwood to take on Howard Payne University this Saturday. UMHB will face the Yellow Jackets in a 1:00 PM kickoff at Gordon Wood Stadium in an American Southwest Conference matchup.

The Cru will be playing a road game for the first time since facing Texas Lutheran University on September 10th. UMHB is 4-0 overall and has a 1-0 record in American Southwest Conference play after topping McMurry University 66-3 last weekend in Belton. The Cru leads the all-time series with Howard Payne 16-2 but both of UMHB’s losses have come in Brownwood. That includes a 24-20 defeat in 2005 when the Cru entered the game ranked #2 in the country. The UMHB coaching staff is keeping that loss fresh in the minds of the players, but the Cru is also focusing on continuing to show improvement each week, no matter who the opponent might be.

“Both our offensive and defensive lines did a good job with what we asked them to do last week,” Cru Football Coach Pete Fredenburg said. “We still have another level we want to get to and we aren’t there yet. We have to keep growing and developing as a team every week. We’ve stressed to our guys that they have to focus on that each and every day in practice and then carry it over into games.”

Howard Payne enters the game with an 0-4 overall record and an 0-1 mark in ASC play. The Yellow Jackets fell to Louisiana College 35-7 last Saturday after opening the season with three losses by six or fewer points. HPU is looking to give first-year head coach Hunter Sims his first collegiate coaching victory.

UMHB will enter the contest ranked #3 in the country by both the AFCA and The Cru is receiving first-place votes in both of those polls and has won 11 consecutive games against the Yellow Jackets.

Saturday’s game will also be broadcast live on K101.7 FM and through the station’s web site with the pre-game show starting at 12:30 PM. UMHB will provide live video streaming and Howard Payne will offer live statistics for the game with links to all live coverage available on the Cru Athletic Department web site at
