Officials said that the officer killed in his Round Rock home was on-duty at the time of the shooting.
Sgt. Craig Hutchinson saw prowlers in his backyard shortly before 1:30 a.m. Monday. Hutchinson called for backup.
Officers found him shot in his backyard near a creek.
Law enforcement have canvassed the neighborhood looking for suspects.
They are still interviewing witnesses.
