Former Baylor Defensive End, Shawn Oakman was indicted on one count of sexual assault Wednesday morning.
A grand jury chose to indict the former football player after a presentation from McLennan County District Attorney.
Oakman was arrested in April after a woman said he raped her after meeting her at a bar. Legal counsel for Oakman maintain the sex was consensual. In a statement, lawyer Michelle Tuegel revealed Oakman and the accuser previously had an intimate relationship include consensual sexual encounters.
Lawyers for Oakman said they are looking forward to the trial where they can present new evidence.
In a statement the full statement Tuegel maintained his innocence:
“it is unfortunate that this situation has been lumped in with other events that are unrelated. It is important that we not rush to judgment. Every citizen accused of a crime in this country is presumed innocent unless the State proves the accused offense beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. We look forward to vigorously defending Mr. Oakman and presenting the facts involved in this situation.”
