Baylor’s Hawthorne Named Good Works Team Nominee

Posted

NORTHBROOK, Ill. - Baylor senior wide receiver Lynx Hawthorne is one of 165 nominees for the 2016 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, Allstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association announced Wednesday.

Since 1992, the award has recognized a select group of college football players who have made a commitment to enriching the lives of others while contributing to the greater good of their communities.

A native of Refugio, Texas, Hawthorne is a versatile fifth-year senior, who has experience playing at receiver, returner and quarterback with 32 career games played entering 2016. Last season, he played in all 13 games as a multi-purpose athlete on offense and special teams. Hawthorne totaled 10 catches for 95 yards and a TD, ran for 129 yards and two TDs on 17 rushes, completed 11 of 23 passes for 66 yards and returned 10 punts for 50 yards on the season.

Hawthorne has been active in the community by volunteering with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes as a Huddle sponsor for Carver Middle School over the past year. He has given his time to pack meals as part of the annual Feed My Starving Children event at Baylor. Hawthorne has also worked with Special Olympics and Lil’ Wranglers programs at BU. He also traveled to Brazil for mission trips with Baylor's Sports Ministry group in 2015 and 2016.

Hawthorne graduated in December of 2015 with a degree in health, kinesiology and leisure studies. He is currently pursuing a second degree in communication studies. He is a two-time Academic All-Big 12 honoree and a four-time Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll selection.

Hawthorne is one of 81 nominees from a FBS school and one of eight from the Big 12 Conference.

Former QB Bryce Petty was the last BU player to earn the nominee distinction (2013 and ’14). Baylor's last player to be an AFCA Good Works Team member was Robert Griffin III in 2011.

From the nominees submitted by sports information directors across the nation on behalf of their schools, a special voting panel consisting of former Good Works Team® members and prominent college football media members will select the 2016 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.®

Once the final team members are announced in September, fans are encouraged to visit the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® website on ESPN.com, featuring profiles and images of the players, for the opportunity to vote for the 2016 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® Captain.

In order to meet the criteria set forth by Allstate and the AFCA, each player must be actively involved with a charitable organization or service group while maintaining a strong academic standing.
