The sixth-ranked McLennan Highlanders swept today's conference doubleheader with the Weatherford Coyotes in Weatherford.
The Highlanders defeated the Coyotes 10-1 in game one with Paul Kirkpatrick getting the win on the mound.
McLennan began the scoring with one run in the top of the second as Brendan Venter doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a fly out by James Rudkin.
Weatherford tied the game with a run in the bottom of the second. Lachlan Mayo singled but was out at second on a fielder's choice by Jaime Lovell. Nicholas Evarts drew a walk. Malik Jones followed with a single to score Lovell.
The Highlanders took the lead with two runs in the third. Tucker Johnson singled and Dimas Ojeda was safe at first on a Weatherford error. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Cory Voss and Venter were both hit by the pitch, bringing Johnson in to score. Ojeda then scored on a fly out by Noah McGowan.
McLennan added four runs in the fifth. Johnson was hit by the pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch. Voss followed with a triple to score Johnson. An overthrow brought Voss in to score. McGowan then walked and scored on a two-run homer by Rudkin.
Another run scored for the Highlanders in the sixth as Creighton Eldridge doubled, stole third and scored on a throwing error by the Weatherford pitcher.
McLennan rounded out the scoring with two runs in the seventh as McGowan singled and scored on another Rudkin two-run homer.
The Highlanders defeated the Coyotes 6-4 in the nightcap with Coleman Beazley getting the win on the mound.
Weatherford scored two runs in the bottom of the first as Desmond Chumley and Sam Mahofski both walked and scored on a triple by Levi Zents.
Eldridge's solo home run in the second put McLennan on the board.
The Highlanders tied the game with a run in the third as Ojeda doubled and came around to score on two wild pitches.
McLennan took the lead with three runs in the sixth. Voss walked and Venter was safe at first on a Weatherford error that advanced Voss to third. Voss came in to score on a sacrifice bunt by McGowan. Venter then scored on a single by Rudkin. Mario Vela followed with a double to score Rudkin.
The Highlanders' final run came in the top of the seventh as Ojeda doubled and scored on a single by Joe Breaux.
The Coyotes rounded out the scoring with two runs in the bottom of the ninth. Lovell reached first safely on a McLennan error. Zach Copple and Evarts drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Lovell came in to score on a errant pick off attempt. Mayo followed with a single to score Copple.
