Manhunt underway for escaped Austin inmate

Posted

Authorities in Austin are searching for an escaped inmate with a history of violence and mental illness.

According to officials, 55-year-old John Michael Wilkinson escaped from Seton Medical Center on Wednesday afternoon. He had been taken there to receive some form of treatment.

Prior to his escape, Wilkinson had been confined to the Austin State Hospital, after he was found incompetent to stand trial in 2015. He had been arrested on misdemeanor charges of criminal trespass, resisting arrest and harassment.

This incident comes months after the Travis County District Attorney's Office argued that he needed to be in a maximum security mental health facility, to prevent escape.

Wilkinson was last seen wearing a gray zip-up jacket, a gray shirt, light blue jeans and brown shoes.

According to the Austin American-Statesman, officials with the Austin Police Department said they could not release a mug shot of Wilkinson until Monday, March 28th.
