Local doctor being awarded medal of excellence

Posted

A local physician is being honored with the 2016 Medal of Excellence by the American Association of Kidney Patients Friday night.

Richard Gibney, MD of Waco and Edward Jones, MD, MBA of Philadelphia, PA will receive the award on Friday, March 18 at a dinner in Chandler, Arizona.

"Dr. Gibney is being recognized as a visionary whose insight and perseverance have led to dramatic advances that improve patient care," a news release said.

Gibney open the first dialysis unit in Waco in the late 1970’s.

The clinic has since grown to 12 dialysis units, servicing four area hospitals. Approximately 800 patients are served between Austin and Dallas.

According to the AAKP, Dr. Gibney routinely demonstrates his desire to achieve the best patient outcomes.

“Perhaps the most impressive outcome at the facilities supervised by Dr. Gibney is a culture of empowering patients to actively participate in their own care, and to experience pride, joy, hope and optimism instead of depress, fatigue and hopelessness, again highlighting the patient-centered care that has been his focus," the group added.

Dr. Gibney finished his Nephrology fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio in 1977.

AAKP is a voluntary non-profit organization founded by kidney patients over 45 years ago.  The organization is dedicated to improving the quality of life of kidney patients through education, advocacy and fostering patient communities.
