Journey To The Tourney: John follows Lady Bears in OKC

Posted

Welcome Baylor Lady Bear fans to my running diary of my trip to Oklahoma City covering Baylor's quest for a sixth-straight Big 12 Tournament title. I arrived in Oklahoma City today after a five hour drive from Waco. Unlike my last trip to OKC to cover the Lady Bears, there wasn't a tornado waiting for me here this time. Thank goodness.

After arriving in OKC, I went immediately to the Chesapeake Energy Arena, where this year's tournament will be held. There I was able to sit in on the Lady Bears' first and only practice of the tournament. The team looked loose and focused, and definitely had the swagger of a Big 12 champion. The Lady Bears ran through drills, got accustom to their new environment and ended the evening by watching the Texas Tech/Iowa State game.

At the end of practice Baylor Coach Kim Mulkey spoke to us (the media) about practice, the team's goals for the tournament and what is in store for the team in tournament play. Mulkey emphasized that she really liked that the game was in Oklahoma City because it is in driving distance for the Baylor faithful. Needless to say, Coach Mulkey expects a lot of green and gold in the stands this weekend.

The rest of my afternoon has consisted of getting ready to go live with all your Lady Bear coverage tonight at 10 p.m. and eating the buffet of unhealthy food choices that the Big 12 likes to supply the media. I mean take a look at that amazing pretzel!

Today has been a slow day, but tomorrow it picks up at 1:30 p.m. when Baylor takes on Texas Tech in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 tournament.
