Posted

WACO, Texas – After helping the Bears sweep the Baylor Classic tournament, freshman Shelly Fanning earned Big 12 Rookie of the Week honors Monday.

Fanning had two match high marks in kills, with 10 in Baylor’s Friday night match against Stephen F. Austin and 11 in Saturday’s match against UNC-Greensboro.

In what served as the tournament’s championship match between Baylor and Rice, Fanning tied with Katie Staiger for the match-high attacking percentage with .429. Her 29 kills were good for second among Baylor players during the weekend tournament.

Showing her dual-threat capabilities, Fanning made her presence felt on defense as well, posting 7 blocks over the weekend.

A true freshman, Fanning is off to a stellar start in the 2015 season, posting the second-best total kills (130) and kills per set (2.71) on the team, as well as the fourth best block total (33).

Baylor will take a quick trip to Denton, taking on North Texas Tuesday night at 7 p.m. The Bears (10-2) will open Big 12 play on the road against Kansas State on Saturday at 7 p.m.
