Baylor Men's Tennis Hosts Three Teams For ITA Kick-Off Weekend

Posted

WACO, Texas - The Baylor men's tennis team will host Oregon, Old Dominion and UC Irvine on Jan. 23-24, 2016, at the Hurd Tennis Center for the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced Thursday.

The three visiting schools will travel to Waco for a four-team tournament with No. 1 seed Baylor facing No. 4 seed UC Irvine and the second-seeded Oregon Ducks playing No. 3 seed Old Dominion on Saturday, Jan. 23. The winners will come back the following day on Sunday, Jan. 24 to play for a berth in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship. Baylor is one of 15 men's host sites around the country for the Kick-Off Weekend.

The three teams chose to come to Waco as part of a draft selection process that was completed on Thursday. The higher ranked teams picked locations first.

The indoor team championship will then be held Feb. 12-15, 2016, in Charlottesville, Va.

As a team, Baylor finished the year ranked No. 3, after posting a 25-6 record and making the NCAA semifinals for the first time since 2007. The Bears won both the Big 12 regular season title as well.

Oregon finished the 2015 campaign ranked 49th nationally. The Ducks posted a 15-9 record, falling in the quarterfinals of the Pac-12 Championships to end the year.

Old Dominion was ranked No. 57 to end 2015, after tallying a 16-3 mark on the season. The Monarchs finished the season in the second round of the Conference USA Championships, but had a team with six freshmen and only one senior.

UC Irvine went 20-13 in 2015 and lost in the Big West title match. The Anteaters were ranked No. 67 to close the season.

Baylor has not played any of the three teams during the Matt Knoll era and has only ever played Old Dominion with that match coming in 1996.

The other 14 host sites are: Oklahoma, TCU, Texas A&M, Illinois, USC, Georgia, Texas, Duke, North Carolina, Ohio State, Wake Forest, Columbia, UCLA and South Florida.

Baylor hosted the event last season, beating Tulane (4-0) and Drake (4-0) to advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Champaign, Ill.
