A local man is behind bars after police say he attacked another man with a baseball bat after a few drinks.
Jose Mendoza has been charged with attempted aggravated assault, evading arrest in a vehicle, resisting arrest, and DWI with a prior conviction.
According to Waco PD Sgt. Patrick Swanton, this incident happened Saturday evening about 6:45 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 4700 block of Staton St.
The alleged victim told police a man he had just met offered him a beer. As the other man, later identified as Mendoza, became intoxicated, he was angry about something. He is then accused of picking up a baseball bat and swinging it at the other man.
Police report the victim was able to block the swings by holding a cooler up in front of him, then run to his apartment and call police.
Mendoza left in a black SUV, but police spotted it a short time later and tried to get him to stop. Police say he initially fled from the officer, but eventually stopped.
