Bromell Named Big 12 Performer of the Year
BU sophomore nabs conference of the year honor.
WACO, Texas - Baylor sophomore sprinter Trayvon Bromell was named the Big 12 Men's Track & Field Performer of the Year, the conference office announced Thursday.
The St. Petersburg, Fla., native becomes the third BU male athlete to win the honor, joining Brandon Couts (1998) and Darold Williamson (2004).
Last weekend at the Big 12 Championships, Bromell won titles in the 100 and 200-meter events.
He started off Sunday by cruising to a 9.91 time to take the 100-meter dash crown. After winning last year's title in a wind-aided 9.77, Bromell repeated as champion in the event by beating the field by .07 seconds. Later in the afternoon he coasted to a win in the 200 meters in a wind-aided 20.64. He earned BU's fourth title in the event and the first since Reggie Witherspoon won the 2007 crown.
Bromell became only the second BU male athlete to win two individual events at the Big 12's outdoor meet (Couts won the 200 and 400-meter races in 1998).
At the conference's outdoor meet, he also anchored BU's second-place 4x100-meter relay team in 39.42.
Bromell has not lost an individual race during the 2015 outdoor season, winning 100-meter titles at the Texas Relays and the Michael Johnson Classic and 200-meter crowns at the Baylor and Longhorn Invitational to go along with his Big 12 gold medals in each event.
Bromell's 100-meter time of 9.90, which he set at the Texas Relays, is third-fastest in the country for 2015 and his 200-meter mark of 20.19 is fourth-best nationally in the current outdoor season.
In 2014, Bromell was named the Big 12 Outstanding Freshman, after last season in which he won the Big 12 100-meter title and went on to claim the NCAA 100-meter crown.
Bromell joins teammate Rachel Johnson, who won the women's performer of the year honor during the indoor season.
Postseason honors are determined by the league's track & field head coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own student-athletes.
The 2015 outdoor season continues with NCAA Regional competition May 28-30 in Austin, Texas. The NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships are scheduled for June 10-13 in Eugene, Ore.
