Baylor Men’s Golf Earns 18th Straight NCAA Tournament Berth

Posted

WACO, Texas – The No. 22-ranked Baylor men's golf team has been awarded the No. 4 seed in the Bremerton (Wash.) Regional of the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship. The bracket was announced Monday on the Golf Channel's Morning Drive.

Baylor earned its 18th consecutive NCAA regional appearance, extending one of the nation's longest active streaks. The three-day, 54-hole tournament is hosted by University of Washington and runs May 14-16 at the Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash., which is one of six regional sites. Additional regionals will be played in Noblesville, Ind., Chapel Hill, N.C., Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., Lubbock, Texas and New Haven, Conn.

“I think it's a very good regional,” head coach Mike McGraw said. “Every year, every coach tries to analyze, this regional's stronger than that one, this and that. And it never plays out the way you think it's going to going into the regional. It never does. So whatever we think about the regional field, it's probably going to be slightly different in reality, anyway. I know our reality is every day preparing the best we can. I know I'm ready for that golf course because I've seen it. So hopefully the experience I've had around that golf course will be somewhat beneficial to these guys as we get up there. But ultimately, you just have to go play good golf.”

Seven teams in the 14-team regional are ranked in the top 50 teams according to the latest GolfStat rankings. The No. 22 Bears are joined by No. 9 South Carolina, No. 14 Southern California, No. 16 Washington, No. 20 Alabama, No. 32 TCU and No. 40 Iowa State.

Those teams will be joined by Sam Houston State, Michigan, California, Virginia Commonwealth, Pepperdine, Cleveland State and South Dakota.

The top five teams and low individual on a non-advancing team will move on to the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship, which will be played May 29-June 3 at the Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.

Baylor is one of seven Big 12 Conference teams to earn an NCAA Tournament bid, including Iowa State (No. 7, Bremerton), Oklahoma (No. 3, Rancho Santa Fe), Oklahoma State (No. 4, New Haven), Texas (No. 1, Lubbock), Texas Tech (No. 2, Lubbock) and TCU (No. 6 Bremerton).
