COLLEGE STATION, TX — Texas A&M men’s tennis sophomore Barnaby Smith was named the SEC Player of the Week by the league office Wednesday afternoon.

“We are all very proud of Barney to earn recognition for his play,’ Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. “He is a testament that hard work, determination, and passion in your craft is the path to success and he certainly leads our team by this example.”

Smith, a High Wycombe, England native, earned a pair of crucial singles victories and the Aggie’s first ranked doubles victory of the spring overcoming two home matches being relocated to Baylor’s indoor tennis facility in Waco due to inclement weather. Smith and classmate, Carlos Aguilar, joined forces for the first time to defeat the No. 51 doubles tandem of Nathan Ponwith and Dominik Kellovsky of Arizona State last Friday evening. Smith followed with an impressive three-set victory over the Sun Devils’ Justin Roberts, ranked No. 97 nationally. Tuesday evening, A&M’s Smith clinched the victory over No. 45 Tulsa with an overpowering 6-3, 6-3 win over Kody Pearson.

Ole Miss’ Karlo Kranic was named SEC Freshman of the Week.

The Aggies hit the road this weekend to open SEC play, facing off against Auburn on Friday and Alabama Sunday afternoon.
