UMHB tennis teams open play at ASC Individual Tournament

ABILENE, TEXAS — The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor women’s tennis team opened a new era with the start of the American Southwest Conference Individual Tournament Friday in Abilene. The tournament is the first for the Cru women under new head coach Daniel White

In flight “A” singles, UMHB’s Victoria Rendon opened with a loss to Alejandra Lopez of St. Thomas. Rendon then fell to Jennifer Garcia of Schreiner University. In flight “B” singles, Nathalie Galligan lost in the opening round before bouncing back with a second round win over Sam Trevino of LeTourneau University.

Amanda Almanza dropped first and second round matches in flight “C” singles, Alondra Torres Diaz lost two matches to open play in flight “D” singles. Reilly Fletcher lost an opening round match in flight “E”, Lauren Hammonds lost her opening match in flight “F”, but bounced back with a 6-0, 6-0 second round win.

Sydney Andersen dropped two matches to open flight “G” play, Macie Dehnisch lost her opening match in flight “H”, but rallied to win in the second round. Laurel Turco matched those results in flight “I”, losing in the first round, but coming back to win a second round match.

Friday’s action was delayed by weather so doubles play did not get underway. The tournament runs through Saturday and is being hosted by McMurry University.

In flight “A” singles, UMHB’s Rafael Omana fell in both the first and second rounds. Brian Martin also dropped a pair of matches to open flight “B” play. Cole Weiss was defeated in the opening round of flight “C”, but fought back to win his second round match.

Jace Mahan lost his opener in flight “D” but recorded a 6-1, 6-1 win in the second round. Robert Galligan also lost in the first round but earned a second round victory in flight “E”. Keaton Brown went 1-1 to open play in flight “G” singles, and will face teammate Cody Aaron on Saturday after Aaron matched that 1-1 record. Brandon Huckabee also went 1-1 to open flight “I” singles for the Cru.

In flight “A” doubles, Martin and Omana fell in the first round. Galligan and Mahan opened flight “C” with an 8-5 win. John Swords and Ty Marshall had a first round bye in flight “E”. The matches in the other flights did not get underway as Friday’s action was delayed by weather. The tournament runs through Saturday and is being hosted by McMurry University.
