Cru softball sweeps Transylvania University

SEGUIN, TX — The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team earned a pair of wins over Transylvania University Monday evening in Seguin, beating TU 4-1 before earning an extra-inning 3-2 win. UMHB improved to 9-9 on the season while Transylvania fell to 3-3.

UMHB took a lead in the first game with a single-run second inning. Avery Kelly hit an RBI single to Hannah Wolfe in that inning before the duo teamed up again, adding Kourtney Cummings as another scoring baserunner to put the Cru up 3-0 after three and a half frames. Kathryn Reed threw the first five innings in the circle for UMHB, giving up just one hit with five strikeouts. Jessi Ives scored one more run for the Cru in the top of the sixth, reaching off an RBI single from Taylor Hewlett. Jacqueline Kay pitched the final two innings for UMHB, allowing three hits and one run. Wolfe led the Cru with three hits and two runs while Kelly added two hits and three RBI. Reed earned the win in the circle for UMHB. Kameron Bowl took the loss for Transylvania, throwing four innings with five hits and three runs allowed. UMHB totaled four runs on 10 hits with no errors while Transylvania had one run on four hits with no errors.

The Cru opened the second game with a 1-0 lead when Kasi Cummings scored on an RBI fielder’s choice from Kourtney Cummings. Transylvania evened the game in the bottom of the next frame when Laurel Major hit an RBI single, scoring Jordyn Powel. The game remained knotted through regulation, sending the contest into extra innings. Both teams exchanged runs in the eighth with Jessica Picou scoring for the Cru and Jordan Krame for TU. Kelly opened the top of the ninth with an RBI triple for UMHB, scoring Jessi Ives to put UMHB up 3-2. Catcher Emily Bounds threw out a base runner in the bottom of that frame, then caught a foul-ball pop-up for back-to-back outs for the Cru. Bayleigh Grogan forced a groundout in the next at-bat, sealing the 3-2 extra-inning win for the Cru. Grogan earned the win for UMHB, pitching all nine innings with five hits and two runs allowed. Grogan struck out four and allowed just one earned run in the contest. Jessica Gunt took the loss for Transylvania, pitching nine innings with eight hits and three runs allowed. Kasi Cummings led the Cru with three hits while Kelly added two. Kasi Cummings, Kourtney Cummings and Kelly all recorded RBI while Kasi Cummings, Ives and Picou all scored runs. UMHB totaled three runs on eight hits while Transylvania had two runs on five hits with one error.

UMHB returns to action March 15th-16th in a three-game series at the University of Texas at Tyler.
