BELTON, TX — The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor softball team earned a series-win over Hardin-Simmons University Saturday afternoon in Belton, beating the Cowgirls 3-0. The win improved UMHB to 7-9 on the season and 7-5 in American Southwest Conference action while Hardin-Simmons fell to 8-10 overall and 5-4 in league play.

UMHB took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Kourtney Cummings slammed a double to left centerfield, scoring Alexis Galvan from second base. Galvan scored again in the bottom of the third, scoring off another RBI from Cummings for a 2-0 UMHB advantage. UMHB tacked on one more run in the bottom of the fifth frame when Cummings hit in Milly Cesare with an RBI single. Kat Reed threw a no-hitter through five frames, giving up two hits in the top of the sixth inning. Hardin-Simmons saw runners on first and second but Kasi Cummings and Hannah Wolfe teamed up for an inning-ending double play to squash the scoring threat. Reed struck out two in the top of the seventh and catcher Emily Bounds threw out a base runner to secure UMHB’s 3-0 win.

Kourtney Cummings led the Cru with three hits while Galvan added two and Bounds hit one. Cummings recorded all three of UMHB’s RBI while Galvan and Cesare teamed up for UMHB’s runs. Reed earned the complete-game win in the circle, allowing three hits and striking out eight batters in the shutout. Gabby Ortega took the loss for Hardin-Simmons, surrendering three runs on six hits with five walks.

UMHB returns to action on Monday, March 11th in a 4 p.m. doubleheader against Transylvania University in Seguin.
