BELTON, TX — The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor baseball team surrendered a nine-run second inning and the Cru’s late comeback fell short in a 13-8 loss to Sul Ross State Friday in Belton. The Lobos take the series 2-1 with Friday’s victory.

UMHB jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Malek Bolin and Jacob Dellipoali had RBI singles and Jason Samuel added a bases-loaded walk to drive in the third run. Sul Ross made the most of three Cru errors in the top of the second to put nine runs on the board. Jett Hartley’s two-run double and Jacob Pool’s two-run homer were the biggest hits in the frame as the Lobos scored seven unearned runs. Sul Ross tacked on single runs in the third and fourth to make it 11-3. Landon Dieterich’s three-run double cut the gap to 11-6 in the bottom of the fourth. The Lobos scored two more in the sixth to make it a 13-6 game before Dieterich struck again. He singled home two runs in the bottom of the eighth and UMHB threatened to add more before leaving the bases loaded. The Cru put a runner on base in the bottom of the ninth but could not get any closer.

Dieterich finished with three hits and five RBI for UMHB. Jackson Godoy added two hits. Aaron Edelmon took the loss despite giving up just four earned runs in six innings of work. Chris York and Tim Johnson had three hits apiece to lead the Lobos offense. Damian Aspetia picked up his first win of the season in relief for Sul Ross.

The Cru is now 5-18 overall and 1-8 in American Southwest Conference play on the season. Sul Ross improves to 11-10 overall and 7-2 in the ASC with the victory. UMHB will play a non-conference game at U.T.-Dallas next Tuesday in Richardson. The Cru returns to ASC play with a three-game series at McMurry University next weekend in Abilene.
