WACO, TX — Redshirt freshman Chase Wehsener was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, it was announced today by the conference office.

Wehsener batted an impressive .429 on the week (6-for-14), with two doubles, three RBIs, five runs scored, two walks and just one strikeout as the Bears went 4-0 last week, including a three-game sweep at TCU, the first sweep in Ft. Worth of the Horned Frogs since 1990.

The San Diego native had at least one hit in all four games on the week, including back-to-back two-hit performances on Saturday and Sunday to complete the sweep of TCU. He collected a two-RBI double on Saturday and followed that up with another RBI double on Sunday at TCU. Overall, the redshirt freshman slashed .429/.529/.571 on the week.

He also continued to play flawless defense at first base, picking a couple of key throws and continuing his streak of errorless play in the field.

On the year, Wehsener is batting .313 as the everyday first baseman, with 17 RBIs, six doubles and one triple.

The honor is the first of Wehsener’s career and the second Newcomer of the Week award this year for the Bears after pitcher Paul Dickens earned the honor earlier this year. It is also the 19th weekly honor for the Bears under head coach Steve Rodriguez.

The Bears are back in action at home this week as they host Kansas State in the final home weekend series of the year, starting on Friday, May 3 at 6:35 p.m.
