WACO, TX — Baylor rising junior Sydney Scheckel will represent collegiate equestrian at the National Collegiate Reining Championship as part of the NRHA Derby, running today through Sunday in Oklahoma City.

“We are extremely excited to have Sydney representing Baylor at the NRHA Derby,” head coach Casie Maxwell said. “She had an outstanding 2018-19 season and is very deserving to have earned the opportunity to compete on this platform.”

Scheckel is one of just four riders selected to go to the National Collegiate Reining Championship after being named an NCEA First Team All-American in April.

“We are so grateful that the NRHA provides this incredible opportunity for collegiate riders to compete on outstanding horses, while also showcasing our sport at one of the greatest events of the year,” Maxwell said.

NRHA and Markel Insurance, a long-standing NRHA Corporate Partner, puts on one of the largest reining events of the year. As a whole, the NRHA Derby boasts a total purse and cash prize amount exceeding an estimated $1 million.

Running for one week each summer, the NRHA Derby showcases the world’s best 4-, 5-, and 6-year-old reining horses and their riders.
