Baylor equestrian claims top Big 12 seed with win over TCU

SPRINGTOWN, TX — No. 5 Baylor equestrian (7-3, 3-1 Big 12) locked up the No. 1 seed at this month’s Big 12 Championship meet when it took an 11-7 road win over No. 8 TCU (5-6, 1-3) Saturday at Turning Point Ranch in Springtown, Texas.

BU secured the top seed in the Big 12 postseason for the fourth time in five years (2015, ’16, ’17, ’19) and first time under second-year head coach Casie Maxwell.

The meet started off with equitation over fences and horsemanship. BU battled the Horned Frogs to a 2-2 tie in fences with Catherine Moorhead’s 77 on Elle and Gia Gulino’s 82 on Mabel earning points.

However, TCU went 4-1 in horsemanship and took a 6-3 lead at the halfway mark of the meet. Kaylee Mellott earned the lone point for the Bears with a 75.5 on Jake.

The meet continued with reining and equitation on the flat. In reining, BU claimed a 3-1 win with Carly Salter (68 on Diesel), Madaline Callaway (70 on Willy) and Sydney Scheckel (71 on Roxie) earning points.

BU locked up a 5-0 win in flat and secured the win behind MOP Madison Day’s 88 on Ozzie. Shannon Hogue scored an 85 on Caprilli while Grace Thiel scored an 87 on Pim and Rachael Davis recorded an 81 on Biggie.

Caroline Weaver’s 84 on Tony made it a clean sweep to help BU outscore the Horned Frogs 8-1 in the second half for the team’s first road win of the season.
