(KXXV) — From small town streets to the lights of a big city. Texas songwriters hail from all corners of our state. They are the poets of our time.

Longtime Mexia resident Cindy Walker's tunes were covered by artists from Ray Charles to Willie Nelson. She's in the Texas Heritage Songwriters' Association Hall of Fame. A group that pays tribute to our songwriting heroes, because it all starts with a songwriter.

"Texas Voices" was invited to the TxHSA Hall of Fame weekend and sat down at Hotel Ella in Austin with TxHSA Hall of Fame Songwriters: Liz Rose, Bruce Robison, Bob McDill, Lee Roy Parnell, Gary Nicholson and BMI Austin Senior Director Mitch Ballard and Drummer Chris Layton formerly of "Double Trouble."

They shared their stories behind the music and why supporting songwriters in the digital age will help keep the profession alive.
