MANDEVILLE, La. (AP) — Two police officers have been shot in Louisiana, one fatally, after a vehicle chase north of New Orleans.

At a news conference, Mandeville Police Chief Gerald Sticker confirmed one officer's death Friday and injuries to another in a shooting near U.S. 190 and Louisiana Highway 22 in his community on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain. Sticker says the wounded officer is expected to survive.

Sticker says most of the deceased officer's family has been notified but his name is being withheld.

Gov. John Bel Edwards says the shooting followed a routine traffic stop that turned into a vehicle pursuit.

St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Randy Smith says two suspects are in custody and a weapon has been recovered. The suspects' names and the possible charges they face weren't immediately released.
