RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a 54-year-old man lit his mother on fire and then locked himself inside a home for five hours before surrendering to authorities.

San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Jodi Miller tells reporters that deputies responding to a domestic violence incident before dawn Monday found the woman suffering from burns at the house in the city of Rancho Cucamonga, east of Los Angeles.

She was hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

Officials say the woman told investigators the man had been acting erratically and set her on fire, though authorities did not say how.

The suspect periodically shouted at sheriff's deputies during a standoff before he was detained late Monday morning.

Officials didn't immediately identify the suspect or the victim.
