BALTIMORE (WJZ/CNN) — A man in Maryland who rushed into a burning home to save his elderly neighbor is still fighting his own battle.

Pierre Gibbons was hurt very badly, and doctors first told his family he wouldn’t survive. But now more than 2 months later, he is doing well.

On Sept. 23, Pierre ran into his neighbor’s burning home.

“He made his way down to the basement and the fire had breached that door on the way to the front door,” Pierre’s son, Jeremiah Gibbons, said.

Pierre collapsed just feet from the front door, trying to use his body to shield his neighbor.

“He wasn't gonna sit back and watch. He wasn't going to spend the rest of his life thinking what he could have done,” his son said.

After being pulled out by firefighters, Pierre’s family was told he had a 10 percent chance of survival. His neighbor passed away a month after the fire.

Pierre, 57, has had at least 10 surgeries, organ failure, skin grafts and skin regrowth treatment, and he is still fighting.

“We tell him to keep fighting and we have got his back and I tell him I love him and that hes going to be ok,” his daughter, Taylor Gibbons, said.

Even doctors have called him a miracle.
