BREATHITT COUNTY, KY (WYMT/CNN) — A blessing box has popped up in Jackson, Kentucky – for pets.

The blessing box is for pet food donations and other supplies. It is located outside of Tiki’s Treasures.

Kentucky is rated one of the worse in the nation for animal abuse and starvation, according to the creator of the box, Travis Combs.

Combs said that a bunch of his friends got together when they saw the need and created the blessing box.

"Anybody at any time can come by. The box is always open. You just drop off any food you can for dogs, cats, any kind of pet. Any kind of pet product, really: pee pads, snacks, anything like that," Combs said.

But it is not only to collect items. The blessing box is for donations, but also for people who need the supplies.

"And then anybody's free to come and take what they need and just leave what they can," Combs said.

Combs said that this is a topic that hits close to home. His family has taken in numerous pets, and he said most of his dogs are rescue dogs that people have kicked out.

He said they have taken them and become attached to each animal.

This blessing box is to help animals who aren’t as lucky.

"Take what you need; leave what you can -- just a way to help out," Combs said.

Whether it is cats or dogs, it is all in an effort to help out our furry friends.

Combs says he's interested in building more pet food blessing boxes.

He's taking requests from places that want them.
