IOWA — An Iowa girl regained her vision after losing it from severe complications of the flu, according to ABC13.

Doctors told the girl the blindness could have been permanent.

The girl's parents told CNN Jade had to be flown to the the University of Iowa's children's hospital on Christmas Eve.

Jade had the Influenza B strain of the flu which health experts say children are the most vulnerable to.

The girl was unresponsive while she was in the pediatric intensive care unit.

"Influenza B is activating her own immune system to start attacking her own organs, specifically the brain and causing brain swelling," said Dr. Aditya Badheka.

"It just hurts, and it rips your heart out because you just want her to wake up," said Jade's mom Amanda Phillips.

When Jade woke up two weeks later, doctors noticed she couldn't see.

They said the flu caused inflammation in her brain and she may be blind forever.

After weeks of treatment and recovery, Jade can see again and will start kindergarten soon.
