ATLANTA, GA — A Georgia woman says her dog was shot during a home invasion, and saved the life of her young niece.

Starla, a 2-year-old Yorkie, managed to distract a pair of robbers who broke into the Georgia home and threatened to shoot the girl.

"This little thing right here. It's just like a little guard dog," Deon Ewing said.

Ewing says the burglary happened when her niece was home alone.

The girl received an alert on her phone that somebody was approaching. She watched as two men began forcing their way inside.

Once inside, Ewing said they immediately fired two shots at her dog Starla.

"She got shot in her front leg and back leg."

While the robbers were distracted, her niece managed to escape through the garage.

"But as she was running out, the one who had the gun asked the other one if they wanted them to shoot her," Ewing said.

She says Starla kept chasing behind the men even after being shot, and the men didn’t shoot.

Instead, they jumped in their car and sped away.
