DoD: 24-year-old Navy sailor declared dead after man overboard incident

The Department of Defense has announced the death of a 24-year-old Navy sailor after a man overboard incident.

According to the DoD, Aviation Electronics Technician 2nd Class Slayton Saldana was assisting Operation Freedom's Sentinel had been listed as Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown (DUSTWUN).

Saldana was listed as DUSTWUN following a July 17 non-combat, man overboard incident while onboard the USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea.

The DoD says the incident is under investigation.

Saldana was assigned to Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5, part of Carrier Air Wing 7, which was assigned to the Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group.
