CAMERON, TX — A new security checkpoint has been installed at the Milam County Courthouse and will require visitors to pass through a metal detector before entering the building.

Milam County Judge Steve Young says that earlier this year, the county decided it was time to install a metal detector and hire a guard to man the checkpoint during operating hours.

"We feel much more secure here than we did before. We just don't want someone to walk in here and hurt people," Judge Young said.

The courthouse is open five days a week and court is held inside the building every day of the work week.

Even with the new metal detector, the policy against guns and other weapons from being taken into the courthouse remains in place.

Visitors will be required to remove any loose change and other metal objects before entering the building.
