MEXIA, TX — The Gibbs Memorial Library in Mexia will remain closed after a fire destroyed the eastern half of the building, according to a press release from Mexia City Manager Eric Garretty.

City dispatchers got a call around 4:15 a.m. Saturday morning from a neighbor of the library reporting smoke and flames coming from the east wing.

Mexia, Wortham and Teague firefighters responded to try to put out the flames. They managed to save the west wing of the library, while the fire consumed the building's eastern half.

The library sits in the 300 block of Rusk.

Firefighters also saved many of the historical records stored at the library. A full accounting of those records will take weeks, according to the city.

An investigation into the cause has begun, so far there's no word on what may have started the fire.
