WACO, TX — Cameron Park Zoo is set to host its fourth Annual Great Ape Cardio Health Workshop on April 9-10.

The two-day event will be attended by 54 participants representing 27 institutions. Three of the attendees are veterinarians with the Bornean Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOS) in Borneo.

The total attendance for the workshops includes 145 participants representing 57 institutions from the US and internationally.

Zoo Atlanta and Cameron Park Zoo were the first two zoos in the US to succeed in training male orangutans to provide consistent voluntary blood pressure readings using a device called a tuff cuff.

Cameron Park Zoo’s females, Mei and Kutai, are the only female orangutans in the US who consistently do voluntary blood pressure readings using the female tuff cuff that was developed locally by Alpha Tech Hydraulics.

The primary goal is to provide institutions that house great apes with a multitude of tools to train and monitor cardiac health.

The species represented are orangutans, chimpanzees, gorillas and bonobo.
