MEXIA, TX — A three-year-old girl was returned to her father after she was found wandering in the middle of the road by a deputy.

According to the Limestone County Sheriff's Office, around 8 p.m. on Monday, July 29, Deputy Kirk was traveling southbound on FM 39 near Roberts Street in Mexia when he found a three-year-old girl walking northbound in the middle of the road.

LCSO says Deputy Kirk stopped and assisted the child to safety while attempting to locate her parents.

Due to the heat, EMS was called out as a precaution to check on the child. The girl was determined to be ok.

LCSO says the father was later found searching for his daughter. LCSO says the father told deputies the child has a slight mental impairment. The father told deputies that his daughter was outside playing with her brothers and sisters while he was working outside when she wandered off.

LCSO says the girl was released to her father.
